Mr. Fields was a beautiful soul we will always remember. If one thing is for certain he would always put a smile on your face and joy in your heart.

William A. Fields was not just a talented craftsman but also an outstanding example to all of us to be kind and caring to others. Our hearts go out to Mr. Fields' family during this time.Yesterday William King Museum of Art lost a wonderful artist in our community. William A. Fields was often a featured artist in our biennial exhibition From These Hills.

He was passionate about the arts and connecting with the community. When he would call on the phone he would always say “Thank God we’re in the land of the living,” and when he would say goodbye, he always said “One day at a time. God willing we’ll see each other again.”

Please see William A. Field’s obituary below, and see his work in our upcoming exhibition From These Hills: Art in the Southern Appalachian Highlands on view September 30, 2021 through February 6, 2022.

Nicholas Stawinski - a native of Detroit - is an artist, furniture designer, and fourth-generation upholsterer.

"My work pays homage to the ottoman and footstool forms that I helped my father create in the back of our upholstery shop."

"Some of the fabrics I use reference specific interiors such as my grandmother’s living room in Michigan... Other shapes and patterns draw from memories of riding across Detroit in our delivery van... In this way, my ottomans are a celebration of the work ethic and skilled trade of upholstery, taught to me by my father. "

View his works in "Mastering Craft: Contemporary Concepts from Regional Makers" on display through September 12, 2021.

Meet enamelist and metalsmith Charity Hall! Charity is a part of our latest exhibition Mastering Craft: Contemporary Concepts from Regional Makers. She is a former botanist and elegantly combines art and science. Hall captures insects that we are so apt to squish, stomp, and smack, and points out that these bugs are actually beautiful and have their place within a larger ecosystem. She says, "From intricate venation patterns within glassy wings...complex microcosms of line, form, and texture abound."

Hall completed her MFA in Metal Design at East Carolina University in 2008 and taught Metalworking and Design at Pima Community College for five years. In 2013, she moved to Blacksburg, Virginia to begin a full-time studio practice. The allure of science remains strong, influencing every piece, and she still roams the forests and mountains, collecting specimens for natural history museums. Her work appears in American Craft Magazine, Behind the Brooch, Humor in Craft, New Rings: 500 Designs from Around the World, and 500 Enameled Objects. Her work has been exhibited in a variety of juried and solo exhibitions. She teaches jewelry and enameling workshops across the United States.

Our intentions are to establish SW Virginia as a leader in the emerging recreational cannabis industry and the garden supply store is our first initiative to move us in this direction. We're looking to offer a couple of shelves in our retail storefront, for free, to Virginian based artisans. I just wanted to comment on the mistreatment and disregard for my work by the HEARTWOOD gallery in Abingdon Virginia. After having my work there for many years I recently requested to pick up all of my work in response to in part how it was displayed. My silk scarves which for several years were a best seller and displayed nicely were thrown into a circular bin like wallmart sale merchandise. My lampwork jewelry was returned wrapped several pieces together after when I sent it to them each piece was put into a nice commercial jewelry box with a clear lid to see contents. I can only guess that they used my boxes when they sold other artists pieces. My leather work was hung next to large windows with full sun and allowed to fade, they were moved after I did point out their error and moved. Lastly when I picked up my work their idea of inventory reconciliation was just a list of what they were returning, for the past 3 years I have tried unsuccessfully to access my inventory list on their "artists" access pages. Just a warning to new artists applying to be juried into the gallery. This is really a sad statement for the way the gallery is being handled today. In the past I had great respect and still admire the beautiful building and idea behind supporting local art, but I am so very disappointed of their treatment of my work recently.

My name is Bonnie Kelley, and I am the artist behind Shamrock Studios: Fine Art Pet Portraits. Although I specialize in equine and canine portraiture, I am always excited to paint whatever animal you love! I paint with acrylics on canvas and wood surfaces, as well as colored pencils on artist paper.

Inspiration comes daily from my beautiful horses and dog. These animals are my world and I am always happy when I'm with them, talking about them, or looking at them! More than 35 years of experience training and working with animals is beneficial when painting, as I have a good understanding of body structure, movement, fur directions, and expressions. Our animals are so unique and special, and I work hard to create one-of-a-kind portraits that will honor each animals' individual spirit.

Pet portraits make wonderful gifts that will be treasured for years to come. Art can be expensive, so I always make sure to offer a few options for more modest budgets. I want everyone to be able to own and love art! If you'd like to find out more, I encourage you to visit www.ShamrockStudios.net. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram, and by email at ShamrockStudios2017@gmail.com.

I have always been an artistic person, but I started painting stall plaques, using acrylic paint on wood, for horse owners around Northern VA when I was in high school. I took a little break to work some desk jobs after moving to Southwest VA, but am happy to be back painting pet portraits with acrylic again!
