I was born in Washington, DC but grew up 100 feet in Maryland. I enjoyed children's classes at the Corcoran School of Art and summers spent on my grandparents farm in Lynchburg, Va. I graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and entered college at Randolph-Macon Woman' College in Lynchburg, Va. While there, I met Peter Fletcher, fell in love and was married at the end of my sophomore year. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and I transferred to Duke, graduating in 1964 with a degree in studio art. In 1966, he received his PhD in mathematics and we moved to Blacksburg, Va. where he began teaching at Virginia Tech. I received an M.A.Ed. in 1976 and began teaching at New River Community College in 1978 with one class, art appreciation. We adopted 2 children. Sadly, my husband died in 2019, the day after our 58th wedding anniversary.
I started off as a painter but ended up as a photographer. The painting is still around because I often paint on my photographs. I have exhibited locally and been accepted in juried shows, both regional and national. I love the Virginia mountain landscape. I am fond of "dead houses" and buildings, things being reclaimed by nature. I'm very fond of plants and flowers. All these things are found in my work. I have prints on magnets and framed tiles as well as canvas and fine art papers, both in color and black and white. Come see me sometime. Be sure to call ahead.
I create photos which are printed on mounted canvas and sometimes painted by hand with oil paint. I use both digital and darkroom techniques. I use Photoshop extensively to create panoramas, digital collages, and infared effects. My favorite subject is southwest Virginia. I love landscapes. I also work with color photography and do watercolors. Before retirement, I taught art and photography at New River Community College and I am happy to give out free art and photo advice.
