Combining traditonal and modern techniques to create contemporary fiber art.

My weavings are very basic in technique, composition and color The process and finished product is a combination of weaving, embroidery and appliqué . They are woven on a small homemade frame loom with no moving parts. I’ve made my own stick shuttles, needles and beater.

I purchase raw fleece of various sheep breeds and colors, preferring wool with long silky fibers. The wool is hand washed, carded, spun and dyed if appropriate. I’m fairly new to spinning and love the process. It’s a happy place to be. I’ve realized that I can sometimes use underspun or overspun wool to an advantage for texture and depth.

I love to design crochet patterns.  Original items I make are featured at Southwest Virginia Cultural Center and Marketplace in Abingdon, Virginia.  I'm also a member of Holston Mountain Artisans at 214 Park St SE, Abingdon, Virginia. They have many beautiful items in their shop.  Feel free to contact me with your custom order. I would be happy to create something just for you.

Joyce creates felted wool (woven or knitted) pencushions, penny rugs, mats, christmas ornaments and more. Most of the wool is recycled from 100% wool garments, sweaters, blankets, and scarves. Pincushions are filled with wool - wool batting, layers of recycled wool or wool "snippets."

I have lived in the beautiful mountains of Floyd County, Virginia for 38 years. I have been Quilting and Sewing for the past 31 years. The last 6 years I been incorporating silk dying and working with wool with my passion of the arts. My scarves are 100% silk and I use several methods to the dying process. I also use acrylic paints in various processes. I am also dying cotton fabrics to use in quilting and sewing.  I use wool to create lovely forest people and animals and make their clothing by hand.

Hand-embroidered note cards for all occasions including Christmas and other holidays. Embellished with beads. Knitted and crocheted scarves, ponchos, hats, shawls.
